Go-Go Beach

Book and Lyrics by JOHN WIMBS
Music by MICHAEL SHAIEB & BRENT LORD

Synopsis

It’s the biggest weekend of the summer for the gang at the beach, with plans for a surfing race and the annual luau. Surfer Woody’s carefree and innocent California life is everything a boy could want: his future is set with J.J., the cutest girl on the beach, he’s got a great bunch of friends and he has never wiped out! But when his old pal Bulldog (a female surfing whiz) comes back from the emerging flower power scene in San Francisco she opens Woody’s eyes to a new perspective and he begins to question his seemingly perfect world. Things get really complicated when he falls for the runaway teen pop star Mindy Chinchilla and Woody is forced to face his truth and discover the real meaning of life. This fun musical tribute to the beach party films of Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello has speaking parts for five guys and six girls and will feature an ensemble of surfer dudes, beach bunnies and “flower power” hippy dancers. Character List

NOTE: All the characters are 1960s pop-culture archetypes – instantly recognizable characters from the media landscape of the era.

WOODY

A 17-year-old All-American golden boy who was born to surf. He is the good-natured leader of the gang whose life has been trouble-free, until he starts to question what is really important to him. Soloist: “Go-Go Beach”, “Duke Kahanamoku’s Roadsters and Jalopies”, “A Boy and A Girl”, “A Day Like Today” and “It’s All About Love”.

J.J.

A 17-year-old beach bunny and Woody’s girlfriend. She is a perfectly charming prize-winning beauty with a tendency to show her control-freak edge. To J.J. appearance is everything! Soloist: “Go-Go Beach”, “His Smile Told Me So”, “A Boy and A Girl”, “The Formula For Love” and “In The Wave”.

MINDY CHINCHILLA

She is an unhappy teen pop star that has runaway from the set of her current movie to escape the overwhelming pressures of her career and a complicated celebrity boyfriend. She has seen a lot of the work for a girl her age. Soloist: “A Boy Like You”, “A Day Like Today”, “In The Wave” and “The Love That Cannot Be”.

BULLDOG

She is a 19-year-old tomboyish surfing chick who has come back a wide-eyed flower child from a trip to San Francisco where she’s had some first-hand experience with the burgeoning hippy culture. Bulldog used to be Woody’s best friend prior to her departure. Soloist: “In San Francisco”, “Don’t Look the Other Way”, “In The Wave” and “It’s All About Love”.

FINGERS

He’s a 17-year-old surfer dude and Woody’s best male buddy. A fun-loving sort of schemer, who boasts of being more active with the girls than he really is because he’s too nervous to approach them. Soloist: “Go-Go Beach”, “Duke Kahanamoku’s Roadsters and Jalopies” and “Girls In Bikinis”.

RIP

A 17-year-old All American, dim-witted affable hunk who is more interested in his own body than any of the bikini-clad girls on the beach. Soloist: “Go-Go Beach”, “Duke Kahanamoku’s Roadsters and Jalopies”, “Girls In Bikinis” and “It’s All About Love”.

EINSTEIN

A 17-year-old science geek who is secretly in love with J.J. He is a stock character from a 1960s Disney film or a younger version of Jerry Lewis as “The Nutty Professor”. Soloist: “Go-Go Beach”, “Duke Kahanamoku’s Roadsters and Jalopies”, “Girls In Bikinis”, “The Formula For Love” and “It’s All About Love”.

BABY

A 17-year-old kooky, naïve innocent who laughs easily—like a young Goldie Hawn from her “Laugh-In” days. She is a little insecure of her body, being a little less developed than the other girls. Soloist: “Go-Go Beach”, “His Smile Told Me So” and “In The Wave”.

KITTEN
A 17-year-old lead dancer role calling for a sexy, voluptuous self-confident actress who can play a 1960s style sex kittle like Ann Margret. She is in love with Fingers. Soloist: “Go-Go Beach”, “His Smile Told Me So”, “In The Wave”, “The Love That Cannot Be” and “It’s All About Love”.
HONEY
A 17-year-old bookish wallflower, plain to the eye, but with loads of potential to come out of her shell and find the beautiful, confident girl underneath. Honey is secretly in love with Einstein. Soloist: “Go-Go Beach”, “His Smile Told Me So”, “In The Wave”, “The Love That Cannot Be” and “It’s All About Love”.
SAMMY LEECH
A 30-year-old soft villain we love to hate. He is the “B” movie producer who comes to the beach looking for his runaway star. He is a Paul Lynde type. Soloist: “Girls In Bikinis”.
ENSEMBLE
A chorus of surfer dudes, beach bunnies and hippy dancers that will also serve as understudies to the main speaking parts. They will be featured heavily as dancers in the musical numbers “In San Francisco” and the Surfing Race.
